Moodle is an open-source Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

A VLE is an online environment that can be used to support flexible and distance learning

The VLE enhances the learning experience by providing increased access to online support and collaboration between learners and tutors. It provides tools to deal with both the academic and administrative demands of distance learning, as well as recognising the importance of the social aspect of learning. Some of the features of the VLE are: student-student and student-tutor discussion boards, student administrator interaction through discreet discussion boards, internal email, access to online study materials, study guides and more.

One of the main advantages of moodle over other systems is that it is centred around collaboration, activity-based learning, and critical reflection.

moodle is now widely used in education. It is a powerful tool and can be used as a single-teacher site or a 40,000-student university.

Who would benefit from using moodle? moodle is an educational tool and collaborative online workspace that can be used by the ACL sector, by charities and NGO's (Non-Governmental Organisations), Trade Unions or even businesses wanting to train their staff in-house and online due to time and resource constraints. It can be used for something as simple as an induction session, including health and safety information to a more complex full course.

Using our own experience as an education provider. We use moodle for the delivery of our own online distance learning courses and are confident that it is the best tool for the job.

WEA CGfL is offering this feature-rich and user-friendly open source VLE as part of our services, which include set-up, hosting and training.

Yes, but isn't moodle free? moodle is indeed free, and is released under the GNU General Public License. However, many non-technical users may not want the trouble of installing and configuring moodle. In addition, educational providers may not have the time or resources to explore and subsequently train their staff and users in moodle. Let us do it for you.
